HISTORY
There are over 200 valerian species and variants found in Australia, China, Europe, India, Japan, and North America (including Mexico). This perennial plant grows up to 4 feet or 125 centimeters in height. The root produces an odor variously described as offensive, distinctive, and penetrating. Valerian’s medicinal use in Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and North America has been documented in Greek, Medieval and Renaissance texts. It has been used as a sedative and an anti-nauseant, as well as for gastrointestinal and urinary symptoms.
