HISTORY
Many different species of the genus Dioscorea exist, but within the complementary medical model, Dioscorea villosa is the one most often used. Wild Yam is distinct from the vegetable often referred to as yam. Dioscorea villosa is a perennial vine, growing to 6 meters or 20 feet. The plant is native to the Eastern United States and Central America. The Aztecs, Mayans, and other native peoples of North and Central America used Wild Yam for treating painful menstruation and labor. This herb was used extensively by eclectic physicians in the United States during the mid to latter part of the 19th century.
