HISTORY

Devil’s Claw is native to Southern and Eastern Africa, notably the Veldt of the Tranvaal region. It is an herbaceous perennial, growing to 1.5 meters or 5 feet in length, with lobed leaves, whose brilliant ‘devil’ red/purple flowers and woody barbed, claw-like fruit are responsible for its descriptive name. Decoctions of dried roots have long been taken as a tea or a tonic by the indigenous peoples of Africa for a variety of digestive and rheumatic conditions. After devil’s claw was introduced to European herbal medicine by Mehnert, this herb became so popular that by 1976 it was estimated that 30,000 arthritic partients in the United Kingdom alone were using it.
